Martians

Yet another scratchboard piece. I love scratchboard—the effect achieved by this medium is similar, if not identical, to the woodcuts I love so well; Frans Masereel’s marvelous woodcut novel, Soleil, had a powerful impact on me when I first saw/read/experienced it many years ago. I also count the woodcuts of Albrecht Durer and Paul Landacre as influences. The concept for Martians came from a short story of the same title that I had published in the Fall 1997 issue of Sou’Wester, a literary magazine. I love to write fiction and poetry, even getting published, winning several writing awards and so on, but feel greater creative fulfillment painting or drawing.
